At what age did you put your baby into restaurant high chairs or shopping carts?

My son is 10 months old, sits independently but is not crawling yet (any day now!). We go out to eat at least twice a week and usually we bring him in in the carseat carrier and then he sits on my husband’s lap for most of the meal, eating little bites from our plates. If we’re eating something that needs two hands, we set him in the carseat for a little while. Usually we either have the carseat on a booth bench, on a stable chair, or in one of those "carseat holders" that some restaurants have.
When I’m on my own with him in a restaurant, I bring a booster seat with tray that has safety straps. I can’t stand that carseat. :)

So far we haven’t put him into one of those wooden highchairs that restaurants have for kids, and we haven’t put him into a grocery cart seat either. (At the grocery store I have him in the BabyBjorn.) I’m afraid that he’ll lean over and fall out!

How old were your kids when you started putting them in these chairs/seats? Did they try to escape/fall out?

I think 10 months is very acceptable to start putting him in the grocery cart and the highchairs when you are out. My daughter was @6 months when we started this. I think as long as they can sit up good on their own, should be fine. I always make sure to strap her in though.. accidents can happen but usually she never tried to get out she is to busy either eating or playing with something to want to pull herself out. But again every parent does things different do what your comfortable with :)

as soon as she could sit up by herself with minimal support, about 4.5mo, in she went!

yeah, at 15mo, she still tries to make a break for it and she’s figured out how to undo the seatbelt clips but isn’t quite strong enough yet to manage but we keep an eye on her.

    she’s never fallen out.

The moment they are able to sit up on their own I put them into shopping carts, I use buckles until about 8-10 months and then I don’t even buckle them in, because by that age they understand the word sit and I want them to know that they have to sit weather they are buckled in or not. For a high chair it sometimes takes a little longer because they need to be able to sit and sit straight, but once they are sitting steady then you can use the high chair. At 10 months he should be plenty old enough and would probably love to see where he is going in a shopping cart.

7 months. I can’t wait to get her into a bigger car seat. She is getting too heavy to take the whole thing in anymore.

I started putting my son in highchairs and shopping carts around 8 months or so. He never tried to climb out because he was buckled in- he couldn’t. I took a container of Clorox wipes with me everywhere to wash them with before I put him in there though… they never clean those things. :S

As soon as she could hold her head up and sit pretty well. I put her in a buggy bagg seat cover in the shopping cart, and use the pillow that comes with it to prop her up, or lay her down and let her sleep. You can use it in a restraunt high chair as well, but I just haven’t done that yet. When I do, I’ll use the rubber placemat that suctions on to the table so that she can’t find any treasures under the table ;)

I know my baby really enjoys playing with her toys (they clip onto the buggy bagg) and looking around at things. This leaves my hands free to shop and do what I need to do. The Buggy bagg also straps onto the cart, and has a seatbelt to clip her in. It’s also got a cool storage compartment/mini-diaper bag off the back of the seat, and cup holders for snacks and sippies later on. It folds into it’s own little duffle with handles for the trunk, and goes on the cart one-handed. I can also use it as a changing pad in a pinch. It’s awesome…I did a lot of reasearch before buying one, and I’m thrilled with it. (can you tell? :) It’s one of the few baby items that is usable well past 2 years old.

Standing or getting out of the seat is a training and sometimes a discipline issue ( if they are pitting their will against yours). This usually happens closer to the two year mark, and can be dangerous. I am hoping she enjoys her little snuggly seat enough to stay put. But if she doesn’t, I am willing to do what I need to do to keep her safe.

6 months with my son, he did fine cuz he was sitting up by himself at that age….try it with your son and if he doesn’t like it take him out…..it is something new so he is bound to love it.

Suggestion: Take along a sanitation wipe, you never know who or what germ is around on those things.

Don’t be afraid all the time. 5-6 months as long as they can sit up right. You have to show them independence
