Our lawn tractor ("ride-on lawn mower") broke the other day – the sprocket that drives the blade belt broke, and my dad just got a new mower. My brother and I are hoping to eventually built an off-road go-cart with it. It’s an 18-horsepower horizontal-drive engine (I’ll have to figure out a way to convert the rotation to a vertical driveshaft). Anyway, I’m planning on using the wheels, axle, steering linkage, etc from the old mower if possible. (The goal here is to spend as little money as possible.)
Anyway, what should I use for the chassis? I don’t want to buy a ready-made chassis, as that would cost $$. lol
I’ve got a friend who does basic welding, so I’m thinking some kind of lightweight tubing (maybe tubing from a chain-link fence)?
I also have an abundance of every sort of wood (we recently tore down two barns and a corn crib) but I’m assuming wood is too heavy and has too much flex.
I’d be very appreciative of any suggestions – especially from people who have done this in the past!
Thanks for the input, where would I get those materials?

maybe a golf cart, a riding lawn mower, boat engine, etc. I need to find a engine that can be used to put it together in a Go Kart. And not have to pay alot for it. Even a chain saw, wash machine or Air Condition. I need a engine that has a rotation and can be fueled or charged.

So today was my first day of work at a grocery store pushing carts and bagging groceries. I only got 3 hours of sleep. I should get 6-10. I couldn’t sleep due to the heat last night. It had everyone up in my house. I managed to fall asleep and then wake up three hours later.
Everything seemed to go fairly smoothly, and by 4 hours my legs began to hurt like a 2 hour hike kind of leg ache. Then once 5 hours hit, it started to hurt a lot more. By 7 hours I felt like crying, and the muscles in my legs actually felt like they were going to burst, and my toes felt like they were bleeding.
Do you think my legs got so weak so fast because of my lack of sleep? I mean, I’ve worked before, but today was also cheque day where I live in Canada, so the mass of people buying groceries and using carts blew my mind.
Was it just a LOT of work, or lack of sleep?
I don’t want to sound whiney, or lazy, because I don’t think this a bad job or anything.

I’m sick and tired of seeing fat people ride on the scooters.
Do you have to be disabled to do it?
If not I’m going to start using them to spite the fatties who aren’t technically handicapped.

I want to build a go cart using a lawnmower engine and the usual horsepower for the engines is 5 horsepowers. And i was wondering how fast someone could go with 5 horses, or a better way to ask it is, how many miles per hour can it produce.
