I am 21 and I have always been into auto racing. Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated with the automobile. Now that I am nearing my graduation from college I have given serious thought into becoming a race car driver. The problem is I have no experience and don’t know where to start. Only racing I have done is at the local go-cart track. Is this a realistic desire? Where do I start?
There are many different forms of racing ( stock car, drag racing and sports car ect..). You have to pick the one that appeals to you the most and give it a shot at an entry level class. Be prepared, racing is an expensive and time consuming endeavor.
check to see if there are any camps out there for this sort of thing. also, read every racing publications to get ideas on whether this is something you really want to do. find out if any professional racers have wrote any books about their stories to get some more ideas. go to as many Nascar races as possible and speak with the promoters and trainers there, and express your interests
good luck
There are proving grounds, and tracks for people like you they provide instruction and equipment for a price, try them first, go to local track near by most big city have them even my small town has both demolition Derby and stock car track these are the starting point for most people.
Go there and ask about the teaching tracks I believe Cleveland Ohio track is open to all for a price, try talking to defencive driving schools their instruction know all about various tracks and schools.
Hint:
Yellow pages and other sites on the Internet.
You asked "Is this a realistic desire? Where do I start"?
Every thing is possible. Where there is a will there is a way minootoo says(I say) where there is wheels there is a track.
Nothing comes easy you must seek it diligently, cant give up.
Read the biographies of the great drivers that will give you how they started at what track,——,—-, ——.
This will give you few other starting point.
Go to the track in your area that has weekly races. Watch from the grandstands a few times. If you still have an interest, buy one of the cars that are for sale. There are usually a few sporting "for sale" signs every week. Bon chance and stay safe.
buy a car and go racing
Well first you’ll need to go to a racing school. Most of our drivers have done Skip Barber, Russell Racing, or Bob Bondurant. Once you get the basics down you will need some serious training. I would suggest Standing Start Driver Development for this. Racing is VERY expensive, and either you bring the money yourself or you retain a sponsor. A good book to learn about how the business of racing works is "The Great Money Hunt" by Andrew Waite. You can start in local club racing which is a bit more economical, or head right into pro racing if the budget and testing time is all taken care of.
Good luck!
