I am currently building a wooden go kart. The frame weighs about 200 -250 lb and with an average person in it, it should be at most 400lb. There is a 12 tooth clutch sprocket and a 40 tooth axel sprocket. Tire size is 13 in. What speed could I expect it to go around?

well a having a clutch is gonna hurt your low end. But: you have a 12:40 tooth ratio. 40 teeth will help you some. you might get 20 mph out of it, a lot more going down a hill. Also depends on how much torque the engine is making. If you can, get a torque a verter for it (CVT). its gonna be slow taking off probably

wood?! are you serious.. 400lbs on a 4 hp motor…

Not fast at all.. It might get going after you make it down the end of a landing strip. A 5hp motor usually gets you going like 20-30 mph. But thats with little 8 inch tires and a steel pipe frame.. Much lighter..

Wood is also dangerous.. but if you are gonna onsit on using wood I suggest ‘spruce’ wood. They make airplanes out of it and its really light and strong. If you are using construction lumber… I would love to see a picture.. LOL…

Seriously.. Buy 100 ft. of tubing. A tubing bender.. and borrow a stick welder and learn something in the process… Look around they sell blue prints..
