The only engine I have to tamper with is an old go cart engine, and I want to learn about VW engines (well I suppose just engines in general) so how similar are the two? (older VW bugs) Thanks!

They both run on gas.. that’s about it. Everything on a VW engine is German. Hence why they are a pain in the butt to work on… if you work on a VW engine it’s no longer German engineering…. it turns Germerican…

OH and they are both cooled by air!

Best way to learn about VW engines — Buy a repair manual and rip one apart!

Or go to the sweetest VW resource in the world, besides Wolfsburg. http://www.vwvortex.com – look in the forums!

I had an ’68 hydraulic clutch and the older ones were mostly air cooled. Your go cart has less horse power than a Bug would but same internal combustion. Check out local library for things. Chilton of Hayes are two publishing companies that cover all the specs and tech for repair and maintenance.

Go to the wreckers and buy a dead DUB motor and take it home, strip it done and rebuild it yourself , well what u can rebuild anyway. Not much to a VW motor until u get to a watercooled engine and evem then its still just an understanding of engine basics. Buy a Manual of sorts a basic or not so basic manual on VW engines in the time period u like or thereabouts and have at it, best way to learn and u may have one heck of a rebuilt motor when finished. Parts are plentiful for the old aircoolers. Get your hands dirty, oil in most places where there shouldn’t be oil and have some fun, good winter project or weekend if u have the money. Plenty of dak dak motors out there ring around sight the motor make sure it has what u want to begin with do the homework and do it.
    Too easy.
