my boys want to build a go cart and they have come home with a pretty good lawn mower, that runs. I do not know how to make a vertical engine move the go cart. Can any one help me, also we do not have a lot of money to spend on this project. If there are things I can use from other items I can probably get my hands on those prety easy, through friends and local salvage yards.

run a automotive V belt as the 90 degree angle gearset. The gearset costs too much and the belt costs little to none. So itll go like this

Engine, below the engine would be the centrifigual clutch. the the belt, which would make the 90 degree turn and go to the chain on its own driveshaft, and then have the chain go to the wheels, and it is ready to ride. Otherwise you can probably flip the gas tank sideways so it dosent leak, and make sure gas isnt leaking out or getting into the oil and call it a day.

You need some sort of angle gear reducer. This will get the power from the vertical shaft to a horizontal position. The engine will have to be mounted higher than normal to allow room for the reducer.

Too bad you didn’t come home with a pretty good edger. Using a vertical shaft motor will cause the kids nothing but grief. A vertical shaft lawnmower engine is not designed for that kind of horizontal strain at the end of the shaft.
