So, I am Middle School Competition Cheerleader. I can do the right splits and cart-wheels,round-offs and both of them one handed. But how do I get all my jumps looking perfect again? What should I do to drop the summer pounds? I am also going into 8th grade, weigh 160 lbs ( I know I am overweight. How do I shed those pounds?), and I am 5 feet tall and 7 inches
Thank You

Do you have a weight room near by?? If you do that is SO helpful. I’m on a high school cheer team and we ALWAYS do an hour of weight room and conditioning before every practice! It helps so much!! If not, then you can always find little workouts to do at home. Even the workouts from Seventeen Magazine can help. They are that great but they can help.

Even while your laying in bed about to go to sleep you can work your abs (What you need to work for better jumps; that and les), by keeping you legs straight and lifting them about 3-6 inches straight up off the bed, and holding for 1 min. During that minute, you should pull your legs a little to the right at 20 seconds, and at 40 seconds move them the same amount to the left.

If you getting something out of the fridge, stand on one leg and lift the other one to your side like you would in a toe touch. but make sure you do the same amount with each leg… you don’t want to be lopsided!!!

Also if you have a trampoline or even a mini trampoline, do jumps on there. Videotape yourself and watch it to see what you need to improve on (point your toes, straighten your legs, arms in a T motion, head up, back straight, wrist, SMILE, etc.)

Basically just work your abs and thighs. Do your jumps as often as possible to get used to them. Work on what you need to work on, and not what you don’t (don’t worry about height if your form is bad), and just have fun!!! :)

About weight… it’s summer, don’t worry about it… plus weights really not THAT important for cheer. just strength, spirit, and flexibility. But if you do workout, you will probs actually gain weight at some point cause muscle weighs more than fatty stufff…. :)

Summer is the time when we forget about diets and eating healthy. My advice would be to start conditioning yourself. Maybe try doing some push-ups and running around your neighborhood or park if you live near one. About your jumps, what I have found helpful is practicing jumps on a trampoline. This way you don’t have to worry about getting enough height. Instead, you can work on perfecting basic things like straight legs and pulling your legs in tight enough or pointing your toes. When you feel comfortable, you can practice them on the ground or floor and focus on the same thing except add height to your jumps.

You can re prepare your self by doing everything you do at practice. Competition season, I believe, is the toughest, and believe or not, I’m in MS division, too. I have to get my back handspring on the floor before the season starts xD
