Sounds like a stuck float, or needle valve isn’t seating right.

Is it black smoke? If so, that indicates unburned fuel, if your float is tsuck, or the needle valve isn’t seating right, then gas will flood into the cylinders, when you apply the choke it limits how much fuel can flow into the cylinder and thats why it will run…

Pull the carb off, take the bowl off the bottom, spray it down real good with some carb and choke cleaner, put it back together and fire it up… see if that doesn’t fix your problem.

Had it been sitting for a little while before it started doing this? If so, then id say its gummed up and doing what I suggest will fix your problem.

P.S., when you are cleaing the carb…make sure you pull the needle valve out and spray the tip of it, and spray the seat real well to make sure you get all the gum out, you might not even see it, but it doesn’t take much to allow fuel to keep flowing.

    Good luck!!!
