Im 14 but know a great deal about mowers so dont think im just some stupid kid… im building a racing lawnmower out of a murray mower frame … im scrapping the tecumsea on board and i have a 12 hp b&s i/c with the govenor removed… i used the one piece flo jet carb on it instead of the factory lmt so i could have a bigger barral with and have a cold air intake system i reversed the stacker pully and will put a 3 inch pully on the tranny. I welded a bracked icut off of a gocart for throttle lever mounting and strait piped the engine with metal pipe… im working on rewiring it so i wont have any traces of an interlock system. I could use any ideas pics diagrams or any other mods … thanks
I answered this under the home and garden maintence repairs. Ill add some here tho, is this for racing circut or personal use? If for racing, check out lawntractor racing websites before going too much further- theres all kinds of guidelines/rules when building one. For personal enjoyment, before assembling – id weld alot of reinforing metal in the frame ( square tubing along inner sides) , reinforce the spindles and steering – add a layer of metal to the flywheel shroud ( removing the governer is at your own risk- the chance of shattering the flywheel is high). Id use go kart spindles, steering setup – so you can lower it and mount bering hubs on front( less friction). Lowering it is for better overall stability. Brakes are another must be- slowing a tractor down from higher speeds , stockers dont do a thing- i suggest a go kart type brake setup . I also want to add, wear a helmit and saftey gear- you only have one brain! Id also add a saftey shutoff switch – in case y fall off , it wont keep running ( bad if its upside down and on top of you ).
Im experementing with a 80s Murray – with the combination of stock 14HP OHV Briggs motor, 6" engine pulley, stock 6 speed trans with 4" pulley , golf kart wheels and 4 bolt bering hubs on spindles, it nets me around 30MPH. The transaxle is limiting the top end, so when it lets go, ill swap a full chain drive with go kart clutch , right angle gear drive and striaght rear axle. Also planned is a 18HP flathead twin cylender briggs going to be swapped on soon. The speed comes from gearing and power, even with the 10HP non goverened, it wont put out as much as a larger motor, mine still has the governer and it goes that fast.
The next project im doing is a older Wheelhorse Raider 10 – going full race setup, go kart wheels/steering , lowering, 16HP tecumseh with oil pressure (oil pressure best for racing) – full chain drive and right angle gear drive( found on bush hogs /field mowers) to a striaght rear axle .
