I bought a mini horse last year..he is broke to a cart but hasn’t been drove in a year. I bought a cart and harness this weekend. I had been driving him off and on. I hooked up the harness and drove him for a while, then I hooked up the cart and walked beside it for a bit. I got on and he was fine for a while. It was like the cart would bump him when we started and stopped and also when we went up the ditch(it wasn’t deep) well the cart spooked him and he took off. I was wondering what would help the cart stay steady. I think I. Had the traces tight enough. He doesn’t wear breeches..do I need them? This is my first time driving a cart!

Our barn got a mini horse who just turned a year old on Saturday and eventually we’re going to each him to jump and pull a cart but he has no idea how to lunge and has no fear of the whip what so ever even if we poke him with it or snap it to get him to go. he just walks around sniffing the ground. he’s much better on a lunge line than in the round pen but it would be much more convenient to lunge him in the round pen. any suggestions?

I am going to train my mini horse who is 7. I was wondering how long does it take to fully train a mini? I went to get a harness a few days ago and the lady at the shop said minis are easy to cart train, is it true? Thanks.
