When you’ve worked horses throughout the decades there are a few that come to mind.

Being bucked off and then drug (’cause I wouldn’t let go of the reins ’cause we were riding along side the highway and didn’t want the gelding to run into the road.) all the time the horse was kicking at me…

Having a horse spook, spin around and bolt wasn’t one issue, I had my reins collected, was finding the stirrups when she went down a gulley and came back up without me… I had my left ankle (leg) in a cast from that sprain.

Trying to get a navicular mare to change into her left lead, I took her in a smaller, then smaller circle and she went DOWN and I went sliding out of the saddle (Saw stars that day.).

Had a mare slip on concrete with me and go down…

Went to collect one of my horses out of pasture and had a newly castrated 3 yr old gelding, fire on my mare as I was riding her out of the pasture and when I tried to duck the gelding’s back feet, slid off and lit on my tail bone (Was off work for a week, but showed at the end of it on a horse that I missed two points from being highpoint.).

Being bucked off my young stud colt (He was 3) and getting my left inside knee stepped on. (Suffered memory loss on that one, they tell me I tried to get back on him.).

AND the final humility… Trying to get on a horse bareback from the back of my pick up and when he backed up, I went to step off the tail gate of the truck to follow him and in midair suddenly realized that the distance between my pickup and the ground was longer than the lenght of my legs. This one cracked my hip and layed me up for a couple of months.

I’ve luckily been relatively uninjured in my horse-riding years; the worst I ever got was a minor concussion and whiplash (I think). But as for horse injuries, I was present and helping when one of our horses kicked through the barn wall and cut an artery in his ankle. That was scary.

my husband was trying to catch a colt in the pasture and he was kicked in the head tore his face up badly had to do bone construction and fix eye socket had a but load of stitches hes ok now but was horrible

I was training my 2ND horse and got bucked of. I landed flat on my back on top of a wooden fen and fractured my back twice.

  5. Kicking Bear says:

I have 2 that stand out at the moment.
I had a horse fall down while I was riding. I got off okay, but the horse tried to get up right away and fell back down on top of me. The point of her hip fell into the small of my back. I didn’t hurt my back that much, but I caused a lot of damage to the kidney she crushed.
Then I had a mare kick me in the knee. I was asking too much in one training session and she was really smart. She kickied me on the outside of the knee and bent it 90 degrees toward my other leg. I recked everything in that knee. I got up, twisted my lower leg so it was back under my thigh, worked her around the round pen so she knew that kicking me didn’t mean that training was over – then I passed out.
I have had a lot of bad injuries with horses, and evry morning when it takes me 15 minutes to be able to stand up straight I am reminded of them.

Well……after all the bucking, rearing, taking off and general craziness I experienced with half broke horses – my worst injury is falling off my mare….kind of.

It was the end of a lesson and I had my right leg thrown over the saddle – kind of like sitting side saddle. I was wearing full chaps and getting ready to unzip them when my instructor came up to check how cool she was. Well her McDonald’s cup was apparently an evil monster out to get my mare and my mare spooked.

I figured I was about to get off anyway, so I jumped, landing on my foot with my left foot a bit out. I heard a noise and thought the zippers of my chaps just clinked together, but after taking a few steps, I realized that I had broken my ankle.

It turned out it was three places – my ankle, a bone behind my ankle and the small bone in my leg (I get fibia and tibula confused all the time – I think it was the tibula – the one that isn’t the shin bone….).

So, yeah – not scary, not all complex, simple emergency dismount type thing, landing on my feet…..but my worst injury.

I was a moron and accepted an "offer" to ride a horse I never saw under saddle before, whom I had already suspected of having some "issues" (he was a mustang with an idiot for an owner/trainer.) I say "offer" because the owner hadn’t ridden this horse in 2 years and was likely afraid of finding herself atop a runaway horse, so she asked me to warm him up since I had been riding much longer.

Well, I got on, he promptly bucked me off, and I landed tailbone-first onto packed-down coarse gravel. I got the wind knocked out of me and really screwed up my back and neck. Both are still messed up 6 years later, and will probably always be. I don’t blame the horse one bit, though…that was all me! Live and learn.

…And THAT is why I always wear helmets, even if I look "overdressed" among a crowd of jeans-wearing trail riders on half-comatose mounts. You just never know.

  8. Tucker says:

    OUCH!!!
Mine was trying to load my QH, mare Chey she 1,100 pounds yes very big girl also some draft we think in her, anyways she didn’t want too, and so how so way she got me, one hoof to the stomach and one to the upper leg inside groin area, well I went back 15 feet to the fence, knocked out, and that night my stomach the hole thing and 3/4 of my leg was black. Yeah that sucked and bad.

Glad your okay , and that I was hehe.

Another time I was on top the horse trying to close a fence, and he got spooked and his head hit mine and knocked me out, another was getting my finger caught under a chain that was attached to a horse, and around a 4X4 and it spooked and he stood on my foot, broken toes, and I had to pull, slide, my finger out from the chain that wasn’t pretty and WOW it hurt like heck.
One time my girl and I were cantering in the sand, and some how she took a digger, landed on me and was so sweet didn’t panic looked over at me, laid quit til I got out from under her and didn’t move til I said okay. Will miss her forever.

My husband first and most likely last time, (he won’t ride anymore) the girth strap broke and no breast collar he was riding my barrel horse, and a full out run stop turned and he didn’t he got knocked out, dislocated his hip, herniated a disk in his back, and got a hernia out of it.

So many booboo’s but that’s some, this one time thank god the child, horse and I had our guarian angles with us, she was riding her horse and he bolted down the dirt road, and I was driving the paved, and lots of trees and they came out in front of me and my car, thank god I don’t drive to fast, maybe bit slow at times, but truley bleive it’s for a reason.

I haven’t had a bad horse horse accident but I can tell you my friend’s. We were trying out new horses that came from the auction we were both doing fine until she asked him to canter. He did canter but really really fast the reins attached to the but broke on one side. So there was no way she could stop. He turned the corner and she fell of hitting the fence on her foot. But the horse kept going. She didn’t break her foot but I think she sprained it.

  10. shadow o says:

there werent too many, for myself… not as bad as breaking anything.
but i was jumping my horse and after the one jump he suddenly turned sharpe and i grabbed on to his neck, tried as hard as i could to stay on but i hit the ground. got back up on him and did the same jumping coarse, got to the same jump he did the same thing, instead of just falling, i got tossed and hit the wall then the ground. first and only time got the wind knocked outta me. after that i decided to call it a day. nothing too bad for myself.

the worset one (it wasnt me but my trainers friend) was my trainer and her friend were at an event. her friend was doing the cross country part when the horse caught it’s leg on the fence, flipped over and ended up crushing the riders chest. both the horse and the rider died that day.

  11. Torry G says:

i was walking my horse then my horse got spooked and dragged me with my hand stuck in the halter and i got my legs stepped on and chest by a 1,000 pouind animal so i got up and got her didnt break anything
when i was 5 years old i got kicked in the head by a horse had stiches to close it i didnt remember what happen but my mom saw the hole thing and told me

  12. cowgirlintex says:

Got bucked off a colt on the 5th ride, did a complete flip and landed flat, broke my 2nd and 3rd lumbar.

  13. HorseReport says:

mine was i was cantering my arab in the ring and we where going along fine and being a arab he let out a buck and i went flying breaking my sacrum(tailbone) and cracking my hip. I was in a wheelchair for 6 weeks and was right back on the horse after.

My second would be when i took a turn to sharp and the horse sliped and i had 1,200Ibs fall on my left foot snaping 4 Metatarsals in Half.

  14. Caitlin C says:

my worst accident wasn’t so bad, but it sure was embarrassing xD

at my lesson i went up to a two point and i was using my old old wintec saddle, and the stirrups are different. so right when i went to go over a two foot jump my stirrup flew off and my whole body shifted and i fell on the jump. i sprained two fingers, but that was a year ago. i haven’t had any accidents since, thankfully.

Man, there is a few…… Ok here’s one. I was putting miles on a green horse. I was in a field with no fence. Well he decided he wasn’t going to stop… He made a B-line for road. He tripped & fell butt over head, thank god I was flung to the side. Broke my arm, his nose was bleeding & ended up poking his eye out. It was very scary at the time!!! Dam this was a long time ago, like 16yrs ago.

Lady down the street sold a horse to a new rider and the horse took off would not stop and the rider and horse ran into a moving train, both were killed

  17. Jade says:

ouch a lot of them sound grusome! I got a couple but my worst is probably when i was jumping…Their was only two off us in the lesson so we decided to have a quick warm up and jump, jump, jump! So it all sounded perfect and we started jumping bout 4foot + me on a little 13.2hh pony and my friend on a 16hh horse! It was 10mins to end of class nd my friend went towards jump nd thee horse cat leaped it (its sure scarey on a big horse) she landed on his neck and just pushed herself back up. I didnt think bout it as i came towards the jump and as im the smallest lightest thing in the world i have no weight behind me for more support in saddle so now my horse came up 2 jump slowed right down bout half way from choppy canter to a slow trot so i cantered him on and he nearly stopped in fornt of the jump so i was about to turn him around when he took the jump on form about half a metre from it! Cat leaping as well! I was left slightly behind (of course!) but i let the reins slip, im not sure what happened next but my feet came out of the stirups and went up in the air. I landed on his neck (still on!!) stirupp leather fell off and went flying and since i was on his neck he bucked, biggest buck in history! I fell off hit the ground full on my shoulder, bounced and hit my head off jump (how, i dont know?!!) everything went blurry and slightl dark for a few seconds, i recovered and people had were rushing over as i saw a horse flying over the top of me! My friend had lost coplete control as the horse had freaked (at what?) and was carrering round the areana. I then opened my eyes to make sure it was safe to sit up and my arm which i was using to help me get up just completely gave way. I got it xrayed and the bone had been pushed right up next to my shoulder blade. (it hurt like hell) They couldnt do anything but put a hanging cast on to pull the bone down…and it hurt!!

Next is probs when a horse was fine and went to feed it and got finger and just hung on and pulled, once it started to let go it pulled off fingernail and it was a broken, severed finger!

Then next when horse stood on my back as i fell off when i was cantering young pony and i didnt have very good seat so off i went with a horse to canter over me!

Many more, but cant go on forever!! Good question by the way ive siad interesting. Jade xx

I had a green horse, I was working for someone. The horse was going to run to the barn. I got him to head in a different direction, but he was still flying & ran me into the tree. No time to jump! I almost did. Broke my collar bone! LOL It was a LONGGGG time ago!!!

  19. Riley says:

I had trained this awesome horse on barrels and it was his first time running full out. I sat down to turn the first barrel and he tripped (the ground was not so great) and before I could get ahold of his head to pick him back up he flipped over head first into the ground and landed (upside down) right on top of me. I got screamed at because I had broken my neck (just a little) and got up to check the horse! That one was not fun. I am so thankful he didn’t get hurt (wasn’t even sore).
The only other time I’ve been hurt was chipping my chin on a barrel. That’ll teach you not to hit them! I was kind of bad with this one, I had a big barrel race the next weekend. And my mother was adamant "you’re drawing out, you can’t run with stitches!" Soo, I took the stitches out like 2 days in. My leg didn’t quite heal right. To this day, if I hist my right barrel, I just black out (normally fall off in the middle of the pattern). Needless to say, i don’t lean right anymore.
My Aunt was probably 10 rides into this colt she had, and she asked too much of him. He got confused and hopped into the air. She pulled him straight on top of her and shattered her pelvis.
And then, the worst one I know of. This 8 year old girl had this big 30yo gelding that all the little kids ran leadline and 10&under on. She was the last one to ride him that day. She had him lined up for the barrels and he just toppled over onto her. He had had a heart attack. The poor little girl lost her horse and broke her leg that day.

I have been riding horses since I was four (now almost 21). My worst horse accident was just recently. I was helping out at a friend’s barn where she did boarding, training, and lessons. She has a green broke paint and we had been riding him back and forth. On December 12, 2007, we were both in her arena and I was riding him. He had a bad habit of turning to bit at your foot when you would kick him. Well, he did that and I tried to kick at his mouth so he would stop. Somehow his lower jaw got caught on the stirrup and turned and freaked out. I didn’t know until later but he reared and fell on top of me. I was still in the saddle so he doubled me over while he was on top of me. (Given he was 4, so he only weighted 900/1000 pounds) I ended up being in the hospital for 5 days with four broken ribs on my left side, lower part of my left lung collapsed, the top part of it was bruised, and I had a cut in my duct system/pancreas. They put a stunt in my pancreas and just recently took it out and I’m back to 100%.

The worst part was my ribs. When you break your ribs, there is nothing they can do about it. Your ribs heal by themselves…but the healing process hurts really bad!!!!

  21. sobemurky says:

OOOOHHH< so many to choose from, the worst I’ve been hurt on a horse would have to be at a ladys saddle bronc riding. It wasn’t really an accident, but I got wrecked. I got whip lash, I think i was knocked unconcious for a brief second, because all I remember was going head first into the dirt and than the nest is being face down in the dirt, dirt in every orifice of my body. The horse apperently kicked me on my way down and spun me. Well, the paramedics came running up and so EVERY one in the audience is like really watching,, I catch my breath stand up and start walking out only to relize my shirt had been torn open in the front exposing me… and of course the pick up man had to make a wise crack at me on my way out. i ended up being hauled out in a meat wagon (ambulance) and strapped down to a back board (which was probably the worst part of all of it. those things hurt.) I got lucky and didn’t break any bones, but I did a lot of damage to my muscle/tendons.

  22. rocket says:

I have gone relatively uninjured throughout my riding career, despite most of my riding experience having come from green horses off the track and problem horses.

… the worst in general was bruising/cracking several ribs when crushed in a horse trailer by a stupid chestnut mare. I asked her over gently so that I could slide behind her butt, but instead she shoved all of her weight on to me, until her feet barely rested on the ground. That hurt.

the scariest LOOKING accident was probably being flipped over on top of by a 17.1 hh well-boned Thoroughbred on cement. He had some major issues. Luckily the only damage was to my beloved dressage saddle… :)

  23. Mo says:

This is my worst one but it ain’t that bad……. I got bucked off my horse… I Had a black Eye a busted nose and mouth a busted knee cap and elbow and many more thing (etc)….. I guess it is pretty bad but it was when i was little… But i guess i’m lucky that it was a little thing instead of a big one……

  24. shikamaruinperson says:

well…I have pain amplification syndrome (a problem where you feel pain worse than normal people) and my horse kicked me in the leg, that wasn’t fun.

then, one time, I was picking his feet, and he lost his balance and yanked his foot away and slammed it down on mine, it broke my foot pretty badly in a few places, but I didn’t feel like going to the doctor for it, so I didn’t. anyway, it healed really funny, so it feels all bumpy and is slightly discolored, and it hurts if I drop something on it.

but my worst one was when I was training this rescue horse to be used for hippotherapy. The hippotherapy people wanted us to tie these special knots so the horses couldn’t untie themselves and walk off (I had a bad feeling about this to begin with), anyway, something scared the horse I was working with, and I was right up next to his head (I was about to put his bridal on) and he sat back, then he got even more scared and reared, and came down–right on me. he then sat back and lounged forward, slamming me into the pipe fence. I tried to untie the knot to free the horse and myself (I was trapped) but, go figure, it was not an emergency knot, and could not be untied quickly, plus it got tangled up when he reared. then the horse reared again and came down on me a second time, then slammed me into the fence again, and I looked over and these three "amazing horse girls" (you know, the snooty ones that think they’re all that, they’re usually younger and kinda suck) were staring at me with their mouths hanging open (not helping me, mind you) and they just watched as the horse came down on me and slammed me into the fence a third time (did I mention I was trapped?). Anyway, by some miracle the horse stopped, and I had to go to the hospital, they were afraid I’d broken some stuff, so I had a lot of x-rays, but escaped with just some pretty severe strains.

    moral of the story?

    drink your milk.

I was about 19 yrs old and I was riding my girlfriends Thoroughbred who was 19 yrs old too LOL, anyways while we were riding Candy (the horse) all of a sudden fell, I flew off her and her hind hoof hit my thigh she went to the ground and was stunned for a second then flew to her feet and stood their wondering what the heck happened. Come to find out she put her foot in a fox hole, man thank goodness their were no injuries on Candy, and I am so happy that I only had a bruise on my thigh for a good two months.

last year in winter, it was wet and muddy and i was walking my horse through mud and my horse hates his feet getting dirty so he was walking fast, just as we got past the mud i slowed down and he stood on the back of my shoe, i fell over and he stood on my leg near my knee and now i have a blood clot

  27. budteresa says:

When I was 11 I let my 16 hh Tb out to the feild following him thru the alley and he kicked out and hit me in the stomach, 2 years later I suffered appendicitis, surgery revealed the kick hit it and folded it in half. Another time jumping my arab at about 13 he landed wrong over the jump and did a summersault on top of me, it hurt but nothing broke. And when I was 8 I was hit by a car when my friend was doubling me and her horse took off down our long driveway and on to the busy street! I ended up with a mild concussion thank god for my helmet I dented the hood roof and trunk in flight.
