Just curious. My son is 8 months and I want to put him in it but am afraid he will just try to chew on the handlebar (yuck!). I hate putting the car seat on the cart as well because I know it isn’t the safest and also the car seat I have is tall (and I am short) and I cant really see where I am going when I push it around. I have to look around the side of it to see where I am going and even with that I have run into many displays/people/other carts. Ya, it is embarrassing. So when did you let them sit in that little seat? Thanks!

I started putting my daughter in when she was about 4 months old – when she could sit up on her own. I bought a cart seat cover so I don’t have to worry about her eating the yucky handlebars. Here’s a link to the cover I have: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6457352&sourceid=1500000000000003260330&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=6457352 but there are a ton of different ones available. Just google "cart covers".

i started putting my son in at 6 months bc he could sit up in it and yes theres been numerous times that hes chewed on the bar lol i always wiped it down with a baby wipe before i put him in or they make the covers for the buggys.

Get some hand sanitizer on wipe down the bar with it because you are right Yuck. I let mine sit in it when they were able to sit up by themselves without any danger of falling over. 8 months seems a little too early.

We let our son at 6 months. Bring along disinfectant wipes in the diaper bag and wipe the handle and around where he’ll be touching if you’re worried about germs…I was always grossed out by it too. Or get one of those cloth covers you can put in that he sits on and it covers the handle.

He was about 7 months old when we started to put him in that. He was getting to big for his car seat (and he hated the thing anyway), so we thought we’d give it a try and he loves it.

If it helps at all, he chewed on the handlebar once or twice, but no biggie. For all the other odds and ends he puts in his mouth, I really think it’s a non-issue.

My son is 8 1/2 months and yesterday was the 1st successful trip to the market w/ my son in the lil seat. My sister gave him a seat cover for the shopping cart seat. This will help so that baby doesn’t get to touch the germs. Take a couple toys so he can play while you shop

my daughter was sitting on her own from about 3 1/2 months and since she was still so young i got one of the shopping cart covers and put that on the cart so she couldn’t chew on anything on the cart but the cover and the loops for the toys to attach. you can get them at wal-mart, target, shopko, any place they sell baby stuff

When my kids could sit up by themself I put them in the seat with a receiving blanket tucked around them to help keep then from sliding around. If you wipe the handle with a disinfectant wipe (dry it good) your baby will be fine.

I used to use a sling. I carried them in the sling when they were little but later, I could transfer them to the seat. I used the sling to cover the seat so I didn’t need one of those silly cart seat covers. I’d attach a toy for them to play with and to distract them from the bars.

What was great was that I could easily transfer the baby between the two. I couldn’t have done it with the fiddly Bjorn which my son had outgrown by 6 months (by contrast, the sling went to age 3, not all the time but convenient for removing sleeping toddlers from car seats). If the baby fussed, I just popped her in the sling and that calmed her. I didn’t depend on her being "good" sitting in the seat the entire time. Especially useful when I had my third and I was doing my major shopping.

You’re right that the car seat is not safe in a shopping cart. I really hate to see those infant buckets perched on the top of carts. Super dangerous!

A good baby carrier simply makes mothering easier. Shopping was so much easier as well as safer. If you have one, use it. If you don’t, get one!

When your baby can sit up on his own, and at 8 mos, I’m assuming he can. You should get one of those shopping cart seat covers. Or put a blanket over the bar so he won’t chew. He’ll probably love sitting in the seat, because he’ll be able to see everything. :)
