Don’t listen to shades.children, he’s an idiot and obviously doesn’t have a Wii since it is called the Shop channel. Yes, you will have to pay. You can buy point cards from pretty much any department store you know sells games (2000 points for $20.00), or you have the option to buy the points from the Shop channel with a credit card.(Visa or Mastercard) You can buy points in 1000s, 2000s, 3000s and 5000s, each for $10.00, $20.00, $30.00, and $50.00, in that order. Tax appies. And in case you didn’t know, the shop channel has Nintendo games at 500 points each, Turbografx16 games at 600 points each, Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games are 800 each, and Nintendo 64 games are 1000 each.

yes you need to buy them. This is done via purchasing Wii points with a credit card or buying a wii points card at a store and entering the code. You spend points to buy games.
